A typically fine portrait of a huntsman by Joshua Dighton, pencil and watercolour with gum arabic highlights. Within a good and perhaps original bird's eye maple veneered frame.

Joshua Dighton (1831-1908) was born in Worcester, the second son of the artist Richard Dighton. He is best known for his portraits of jockeys. His earliest known work is one such portrait, that of Fulwar Craven, painted in 1845 and now in the collection of the Cheltenham Art Gallery. He is recorded as working in Hammersmith, Merton, Wimbledon, Pimlico and Battersea.
