William Lee Hanky was born in Chester, 1869 and was educated at King Edward's School there. He was on active service in Flanders with the Artists' rifles being promoted to captain in 1917. His work is considered as sensitive and of the highest quality. He was a leading light of the Newlyn School. Exhibited 81 works at the Royal Academy and is represented at the V&A, Dundee City Art Gallery, Glasgow City Art Gallery, Brighton, Manchester, Newport, Ulster and the Grosvenor Museum, Chester.

The sitter, Francis Howard Paget, gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards.
