Born in Carlisle in 1833 and trained by his chemist turned artist father Thomas Heathfield Carrick, the entire family had settled in London by 1839. Following study and exhibition at the British Institution he exhibited regularly at the R.A during the mid 1850s. Developing a style that came to be seen as 'Pre-Rafaelite' he was living and working in Cornwall by 1871 and with the Newlyn artists by 1883. He died at his London home, Chiswick, in 1896 aged 63.
