A fine yet substantial little pepper caster, the threaded fixing for the pierced lid an indicator of superior quality.

By the eighteenth century pepper was being produced in many tropical sites beyond its native India making it widely affordable. The spice had previously been much rarer, highly desirable and thereby precious and expensive.
