Georgian Cut-Steel Snuffers

hover over image to zoom

Fine Georgian cut-steel snuffers or wick trimmers.

Invented out of necessity and reaching their pinnacle in both form and function around 1790, candle snuffers such as these largely fell from use after the invention of the self-trimming plaited wick in 1825.

Joseph Cambacères’ invention allowed the wick to curl over into the hottest part of the candle’s flame where it was simply burnt away.

English circa 1785.

6.75 inches long.
