Georgian Baleen Wrapped Walking Cane

hover over image to zoom

A rare Georgian walking cane wrapped spirally in two ribbons of baleen, the original 'whalebone', with a simple top of silver-coloured metal and pierced beneath this for a lanyard.

English circa 1790.

The German emigré, Georg Steinberg, developed a process of wrapping sticks and telescopes in baleen. Some of his canes have silver mounts stamped ‘Steinberg Patent’ although no patent was lodged in his name. Likely that this done in an effort to deter imitators. Steinberg seems also to have sold his product to contemporary telescope makers and they in turn to have updated the appearance of older instruments as several examples are known of his work adorning early 18th century telescopes.

35 3/4 inches long
