Gautier, Secretary to the King, was a wealthy and educated man of letters and collector of art. It seems that Reynolds met with him and painted his portrait when visiting Paris in 1752, there to study the Old Masters, including 'Van Dyck, Jordaens, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Titian'. These works would have been in private collections and Gautier is known to have held works by these great artists, especially Rembrandt.
