French Folding Travelling Lantern

hover over image to zoom

Extremely rare folding, travelling lantern, made of walnut and paper, the curled wax taper the same as encountered on 'wax jacks' of the 18th century; in exceptional, original condition. A similar example, identified as French, is shown in Pinto's, (plate 122) and discussed on p.122; 'survivals are extremely rare and date from the middle to end of the 16th century'. The example shown in Pinto's has replacement paper whereas in this example the paper is considered original. Two further similar examples were sold at auction in France and catalogued as 'probably by Cesar Bagard's Workshop, late 17th/early 18th century'. (See final photograph). We understand that the lantern listed here was recently discovered amongst the contents of a Georgian period ladies sewing box all dating from early to mid eighteenth century.

3.5 inches diameter.
