French Corinthian Column Lamp

hover over image to zoom

A fine French architectural lampbase in the form of a corinthian column, the plinth base emblazoned with symbols of love; a quiver with arrows, cupid’s bow, and a flaming torch surrounded by a garland of roses. The alternate faces of the plinth are decorated with a device of crossed thyrsi, emblematic of Dionysos for fertility, and surrounded by ivy for immortality.

The column is a spiral of flowers based on the design of Napoleon's column in Place Vendome, which in turn is based on Trajan's column in Rome.

Dating from the middle of the 19th century, later adapted for electricity.

5 inches x 5 inches x h:22.25 inches (to the top of the acanthus capital).
