Antoine Le Loup (1730-1802) was a topographical artist working from his home town of Spa, Belgium. He was taught by his father, Remaele Le Loup, and followed very much in his footsteps. He was also to become a draftsman and engraver and specialized in views in and around his home town of Spa. He contributed plates to J. P. de Limburg's topographical book Nouveaux Amusements des Eaux de Spa (Liege, 1763). The scene on this box is unusual for Le Loup and perhaps what he came to enjoy painting later in his life. A similar box but with a typical topographical scene inset to the lid, was offered at Hampel Fine Art Auctions as part of a collection of gold boxes, December 2019, lot 304.
