Lucas Vorsterman was an engraver, etcher, draughtsman and publisher, considered the finest in Rubens school. Following an argument with Rubens in 1622, he left the studio and came to London, 1624. In 1630 Vorsterman returned to Antwerp via Paris and went blind during the decade in which this engraving was produced.
The subject, Hubert Van den Eynde (1593-1662) was a sculptor from Antwerp. He became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1620, the first prominent sculptor of the Van den Eynde family of artists and entrepreneurs.
