hover over image to zoom

An English cast brass skimmer with which "cooks take away all the filth and scume from off a boiling pott the liquor runing throw the holes, and the dreggs remaineing on the scummer".

This example with a worn maker's mark but most probably the spoon-maker who marks himself with conjoined 'WD'. Made similar throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, this example thought to date to around 1750.

For a very similar example see Roderick Butler's 'A Study Collection of Marked Domestic Brass and Other Base Metalware c.1600-c.1900. Marwood House, Honiton September 2001. No. 196.
