Thomas Bush Hardy was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1842. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1884 and exhibited with this Society and at the Royal Academy thereafter. He died in London, Maida Vale, in 1897. Many of his paintings feature coastal scenes in England and the Netherlands, the French Channel ports and the Venetian Lagoon. This view of Eastbourne shows the many groynes stretching into the sea with the distictive form of the coast's Martello Towers stretching out behind.
