A Georgian cut steel sewing clamp, with a heart-shaped thumb-piece.

English, probably Birmingham, circa 1800.

Cut steel tools were decorated with faceted studs to catch the candlelight like gemstones; they were durable as well as pretty. Often produced at workshops engaged in the business of making razors penknives and scissors, these cut steel tools were costly and high-status possessions.

One cut steel stud lost from around the pincushion.
