A fabulous cut steel sewing clamp with thread winder and thimble holder, a band with lace-like decoration around the cushion. English, perhaps Birmingham, more likely London, circa 1800. For a similar example by George Palmer see The V & A Collection, museum No. M.27-1997. Cut steel tools were decorated with faceted studs to catch the candlelight like gemstones; they were durable as well as pretty. Often produced at workshops engaged in the business of making razors penknives and scissors, these cut steel tools were costly and high-status possessions.
