The first brougham was commissioned in 1837 by Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868). He wanted “a refined and glorified street cab which would make a convenient carriage for a gentleman”. Lord Brougham's regular coach builder rejected the commission and so it fell to another, Robinson & Cook, to develop the concept which was named the Brougham with the express permission of his lordship. This cab was an instant success, being built in vast numbers and rapidly becoming the preferred choice of professional and middle classes as well as being used as an everyday carriage by the wealthy and aristocratic.
