Chess Piece Commemorating Telegraphed Match

hover over image to zoom

One of 10 engraved and gilded rooks commissioned from the Piccadilly firm of Giuliano (Carlo & Arthur Giuliano) to commemorate a chess match played between the House of Commons in Great Britain and the House of Representatives in the United States of America.

Five members from each house played the game making moves communicated “over the lines of The Anglo American Telegraph Co. London and Western Union Telegraph Co. New York, 1897”.

Although the number of these pieces made is not known it is thought that one was presented to each of the ten players.

Note: This present example is missing a cross section of the cable originally held beneath glass and within the turret.
