Born Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 19 May 1744, the youngest daughter of Duke Charles of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elizabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. In 1761, aged seventeen, Charlotte was bought to England to marry the twenty two year old King George III. Within a year of their marriage the Queen gave birth to their first child, the Prince of Wales who was later to become King George IV. In all, the King and Queen became parents to fifteen children over the course of their marriage. She died at Dutch House, (now Kew Palace), in November 1818 and was buried at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. 

This image a mezzotint, engraved by James McArdell, perhaps after his own drawing, laid down onto glass and reverse painted. ‘Printed for John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill, London’ circa 1765.

Within a fine original ebonized print frame with a carved and sanded gilt slip.
