French, cast and painted metal candlesticks modeled on characters from Le Malade Imaginaire by Moliere; Monsieur Purgon and his patient. This pair of spelter candlesticks are from a series of such novelty-themed candlesticks produced in France during the last quarter of the 19th century. The subjects usually mimic different aspects of French society and in at least two instances are based on characters found in the 17th century plays of Moliere; this pair and another that are made up one Cyrano de Bergerac and the character Harpagon from the play L’Avare by Moliere.
Moliere (1622-1673) was a 17th century actor and playwright who is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy and farce of Western literature. This pair of candlesticks were made around 1880 from a cast zinc-based alloy known as spelter.
They each stand approximately 13.25 inches high.
