A pair of capriccios by Thomas Compigne, a peintre and tabletier working under the patronage of Louis XV. Two-tone gold leaf over a pressed tortoiseshell base and within the original pressed organic material frame. (The frames with small differences in their moulding).


Thomas Compigne was based in the Rue Grenetta at the 'Roi David'. His speciality were exquisite pictures of country houses, townscapes and landscapes. These were executed in gouache, silver and gold on a pewter or tortoiseshell ground and were much admired and sought after by the rich cognoscenti.
