A 'Berlin Iron' cross. 2 5/8 in x 2 in

Iron jewellery, popular throughout the 19th century, was prolifically produced in the Prussian capital, becoming generically referred to as ‘Berlin Iron’. It was during the Prussian War of Independence, between 1813 and 1815, that women famously supported the war effort by exchanging their precious jewels for delicate and ornate ironwork, the designs initially neo-classical, becoming Gothic as the century advanced. It was soon produced in other countries, such as Germany, Austria and France and from the 1830’s is recorded as being sold at Garrard’s in London.
