Early to mid 19th century Austro-Hungarian sewing box made of polished agate panels set within a machine engraved and gilded brass frame with escutcheon, lock and key; standing on four matching agate feet cut to resemble tassels.
Within is a lift-out tray holding sewing tools; scissors, bodkin, thimble, large needle and a folding knife. This last item, evidently original to the box, is stamped on the blade James Rodgers, beneath a crown and V.R.; the company using this mark around 1840.
