'August' by Houston after Pyle

A mid eighteenth century reverse painted mezzotint laid down onto glass; the month of August.

 

Produced in this small, rare size and in a totally original state.

 

The image was produced by Robert Pyle and engraved by Richard Houston. Pyle was an eighteenth century commercial artist, recorded as a painter/draughtsman working in London during the 1760's. Richard Houston was a Dubliner who came to London in around 1746 and worked principally for the Bowles family of publishers. He absconded for debt in 1762 and at his death in 1775 was recorded as 'the celebrated mezzotinto engraver'.
