The carving of walrus and mammoth bone and ivory has had a long tradition within popular Russian culture, originating in the northern regions. Archangelsk, which is located on the White Sea coast, was an important trading city in the far north of Russia and became known as a centre for the walrus ivory trade. During the 18th century the region produced a range of high quality, decorative objects including caskets, toilet boxes and combs; the most sophisticated examples, such as this games box, incorporating pierced panels with scenes of people and animals, drawing on Western European design sources. These designs reached the region through carvers trained mostly in St. Petersburg, who after several years there both training and working returned to their native northerly region.
