A rare pair of portrait busts in black basalt from the Herculaneum Pottery, Liverpool, after models by Pierre Stephan. English circa 1800.

Pierre-Stephan was a late eighteenth century modeller who worked at Derby and Wirksworth; he is also known to have supplied models to Josiah Wedgewood. These two portrait busts were also produced in buff stoneware, enamelled earthenware and enamelled porcelain. A buff stoneware version of Lord Duncan is held in the V&A collection, museum number 414:1119-1885.
