Actaeon Watching Diana and Her Nymphs Bathing, a popular subject for artists since the renaissance here engraved by John Smith (1652-1742) after the work of Pierre Berchet (1660-1720, working initially in France and from the 1690’s in England).

 

The mezzotint was originally published around 1705, here laid onto glass and reverse painted, within the original ‘Hogarth’ carved and parcel-gilt frame,
